The cartoon was based on newspaper reports of "all is quiet tonight", which was also based on official telegrams sent to the Secretary of War by Yankee Major-General George B. McClellan following the Confederate victory at the Battle of Manassas Virginia. However it was noticed that the report was followed by a small note telling of a pickets being killed along the Potomac River.
